What’s My Haircare Routine?

I used to dread thinking about what my haircare routine would be. I would spend hours watching YouTube videos searching under the terms, “simple haircare routine for Black women.” At some point, watching all the YouTube videos of fellow curl-friends talking in detail about their lineup of products made me think I would never have the knowledge, or the patience, to create this for myself. I can’t complain too much though, because I also know how much of a blessing it is to be watching these videos, made by women who looked like me, hair and all. But as I began this journey, I realized that I had to make a shift in how I absorbed this information. With all of these women sharing their journeys, it wasn’t my responsibility to copy them. Instead, I had to read between the lines and understand how they structured their solutions in the first place. I began to watch the same videos over again to understand and find the common themes that made a healthy and holistic haircare routine. In short, this is what I found a solid haircare routine consists of:

  • Cleansing

  • Conditioning

  • Treatments

  • Moisturizing

  • Sealants

  • Detangling

Whether you’re currently experiencing the best haircare routine ever, or you have a routine that needs some work, I invite you to watch this video as I break down the components of a basic routine. The objective is to equip you with a structured outline to help you build your own holistic haircare routine. I emphasize the word “holistic” because this video doesn’t simply talk about what shampoos or conditioners you should use. Instead, I make it a point to understand how these components keep your hair clean, healthy and true to its essence. Now that you’re aware of the types of ingredients you need, today I will provide you with all the tools you’ll need to easily structure your own routine.

By the end of this video, you will understand the basic components of a healthy routine and have the confidence to begin building your own. With each step of this journey, you are acquiring more information about your hair, what it needs and becoming your own expert. Step into that title confidently and you will begin living your best hair life.

I want to hear from you. What has discovering your hair identity been like? Have you enjoyed the journey? Are there any stories you wish to share? Please post your comments below, I would love to read them.
